What you’d earn. And then, the application.
Before the form, the numbers — openly. We believe a teacher should see the whole picture before signing anything.
The rate, plainly.
That’s what reaches your bank account. We do not take a cut from it. There are no platform fees, no processing fees, no surprise deductions.
| Session length | Your take-home | Effective hourly |
|---|---|---|
| 50 minutes (standard) | $42.50 | $51 / hr |
| 30 minutes (younger children, intro sessions) | $30.00 | $60 / hr |
A note on rate increases. These are starting rates — not ceilings. We expect to raise them as the company stabilizes, and teachers who’ve been with us longest will be first to see increases.
Paid every two weeks. No fees.
What a month looks like.
Three honest examples of what a teaching week could look like, and what that adds up to in a month. Use them as a starting point. Your real schedule is whatever fits your life.
- A lighter week, about seven hours ≈ $1,240 / month
- A steady week, about eleven hours ≈ $1,900 / month
- A fuller week, about fifteen hours ≈ $2,760 / month
All figures pre-tax. These assume you are teaching every week of the school year, with reasonable breaks for holidays. Most teachers settle into four to ten hours a week, which is a healthy, sustainable load alongside the rest of life.
A short form.
There is no formal scoring rubric, no AI screen, no group-interview round. Tell us where you’ve taught, where you’ve lived, and what you’d like the next chapter of your teaching life to look like. We’ll write back, in our own voice, within five business days.
Submitting opens your email client — that’s intentional. If it doesn’t work on your device, write directly to teachers@vellumclass.com and we’ll send the questions by reply.
On the rate.
Why $42.50 for 50 minutes? Why not more, or less?
It’s the rate we landed on after talking to senior teachers about what would make this worth their time. It’s well above what the large tutoring platforms pay (typically $15–$30/hr), and the rate reaches you in full — we take no cut from it. It’s a starting point, not a ceiling: we expect to raise it as the company grows, and teachers who’ve been with us longest will be first to see increases.
Why is the half-hour rate $30 and not exactly half?
Because thirty-minute sessions still require the same prep, the same set-up, the same warm-up minute, and the same wrap-up. We weighted the rate so a half-hour doesn’t penalise you for taking on younger children or intro sessions, which is where the half-hour format usually shows up.
Will my pension be safe at this rate?
Vellum is not a participating employer in any teacher pension system, so contractor income with us does not count against TRS, OTPP, or comparable re-employment limits we’ve researched. See the pensions note on the About page for the full picture.
What about prep time, parent updates, admin?
The session rate is the session rate — we don’t bill families for prep or admin, and we don’t expect you to do hours of unpaid work for us either. Light, ongoing prep is normal teaching practice; what we won’t do is dump scheduling, billing, or customer-service work on you. That’s our job.
